Honeybees Spotlight: Alexa
By: Hornets.com | August 25, 2011

Hometown: Brick, New Jersey.
Year as a Honeybee: Second.

Previous dance experience:

By the time I was able to walk, I was also dancing all over the house; I think it’s safe to say I was born a performer! My mother enrolled me in ballet classes when I was 3, although I didn't become a serious student until I reached the sixth grade. My close proximity to New York City allowed me to take classes from world-renowned choreographers in the convenience of my hometown dance studio. I spent most of my teenaged years participating in dance competitions and conventions up and down the East Coast. During my senior year of high school, I trained and performed with a hip-hop company called FR3SH, who were featured on MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew Season 4.” I spent my freshman year of college dancing for Tulane University's Shockwave dance team, where fellow Honeybee Brianna was my coach. Now we share the stage...or court, that is!

What I love about being a Honeybee:

Although I am not a New Orleans native, being a Honeybee has allowed me to become part of this unique city both on and off the court. Performing is my first love; nothing compares to dancing for an exhilarated crowd of thousands every week. Whether I’m tossing a T-shirt to an excited fan, doing my infamous hair flips for Dance Cam or cheering on the Hornets during a nail-biting overtime, there is never a dull moment being a Honeybee at the Hive! My job off the court, though, is even more gratifying. From rewarding children in the Chevron MVP Program for their hard work in school to running Junior Honeybee clinics, I am honored to be part of an organization that is so hands-on and community-oriented. Of course, none of this would be possible without my incredible teammates! Their talent, dedication and determination make them wonderful ambassadors of the Hornets, but also extremely admirable women whom I also look up to.

What I love about dancing:

For me, dancing has always been more than just an activity – it’s a confidence booster! When the music is on and it’s time to perform, let’s just say I channel my inner “Sasha Fierce” and become a whole other person. In those moments, I feel like I’m on top of the world and no one can do anything to take that away from me. Dancing is empowering and allows me to be the fun, fearless female that I’ve always wanted to be!

What I love about New Orleans:

New Orleans embodies such a different mindset from other places I’ve been to. While it is a city, it has a small-town feel; never have I been in a place where strangers warmly greet you while walking down the street, as if you’ve known each other for years! The genuine kindness and unwavering passion of New Orleanians is a refreshing change of pace for a girl from the Northeast. This city has welcomed me with open arms, and I am proud to say that I am more than just a college student living in the Big Easy!

What I love to do when I’m not performing with the Honeybees:

When am I not performing with the Honeybees?! Just kidding! I’m a full-time marketing major at Tulane, so when I'm not in class or studying I love to spend quality time with friends doing things like shopping on Magazine Street or cheering on our classmates at Green Wave sporting events. I also spend a little too much time in front of the computer on websites like Facebook and Twitter.
